Opto-stimulating electrode for peripheral nerves stimulation and recording

Opto-stimulating electrode for peripheral nerves stimulation and recording

The electrode is built with microLED light source (up to 50 mW) fixed on the tip of flexible, stretchable, biocompatible tubing.  It customizable in color and permits chronic implantation in rat or mouse.

The electrode may include platinum or tungsten microwires, 0.05 mm in diameter, for additional electrical stimulation or registration of the electrical activity of the nerve. Depending on the number of conductors, the diameter of the electrode is 1.0 – 1.8 mm (2 – 5 microwires) and the elongation of the tubing is 10-50% (this parameter depends on number of conductors).

Graphite filling as additional option counteracts triboelectric noise and permits registration of  small signals.

Fully-functional cuff electrode is formed with help of the platinum microwires and a fast hardening biocompatible silicone.
